  17. <p>    For many homeless people, collecting the deposits on empty
  18. beverage containers is not a nickel-and-dime affair -- it's a
  19. living. Some redeem 400 or more cans each day, enough to pay
  20. for a meal and a night in a flophouse. Last week attorneys for
  21. the homeless filed a lawsuit in New York, one of nine states
  22. that require deposits, alleging that some of the state's
  23. largest supermarket chains have been breaking the law to
  24. discourage the scavengers.

  26. <p>    Lawyers for the Legal Action Center for the Homeless claim
  27. that though the law requires stores to take up to 240 returns
  28. a day per customer, some refuse to accept more than ten. The
  29. suit alleges that grocers have given in to pressure from
  30. beverage bottlers and distributors not to accept the containers
  31. so that the distributors can keep unclaimed deposits, which last
  32. year totaled nearly $80 million. Bottlers say supermarkets don't
  33. want to hassle with returns.
